Artist guidelines

Performance Slots

  • All shows receive two slots with running time no longer than 60 minutes.

  • One off shows, showcases and pop up events will receive one slot with varying length depending on venue and time of day. Gallery exhibitions stay up for the duration of the festival.

  • This year will introduce a limit on hour long stand up performances, instead encouraging 30 to 45 minutes running time (unless previously agreed upon)

  • The festival will allocate each show with an appropriate venue and time for each slot; this can be negotiated, however do keep in mind we need to schedule an entire festival in a five day period.

  • Each Reykjavik Fringe stage/space is typically used by several productions during the course of the festival. Generally get in times and get out times are either 15 or 30 minutes, again this can be negotiated but must be asked sooner rather than later.

Festival Program and Self-Promotion:

  • All selected artists are featured in the RVK Fringe Brochure, printed and online, and we encourage all artists to create a Facebook event that is co-hosted by RVK Fringe.

  • Artists can update their own images and edit text through the Eventotron portal up until April 31st. After this date, all changes must be requested through email. Brochures will be printed beginning or mid-May.

  • All promotional images must be high resolution!
Substandard/low resolution promotional images cannot be included in any official brochures/online marketing. If you are struggling with this, please email the tech team at tech@rvkfringe.is .

  • It’s best to be available for the whole week of the festival. Starting the week with hanging up posters, promoting your show and getting the full RVK Fringe experience. Make sure to attend the festival’s opening party, preview nights and meet & greets. This is not mandatory, but highly advised. If you are missing the beginning of the week, please let us know in advance.

  • Send out press releases to both your local media and to Icelandic media, hyperlink your webpage or your social media tags in those press releases. We’ll let you know when’s best to do that.

  • You are in charge of designing your own posters/flyers and other marketing material. RVK Fringe has an agreement with Háskólaprent printing office that will offer you discounted rates on printed materials. You are in charge of sending your printed materials to them, however if you need any help then please contact the team at info@rvkfringe.is .

  • We will want posters and flyers to be organized for at least two weeks before the festival begins. This is so any problems regarding printing can be fixed and we can begin the process of postering venues. If you cannot be there to collect, then you can nominate an artist or ask us to collect on your behalf (depending on availability of production team and volunteers)

Venues

  • RVK Fringe 2027 will have multiple venues across downtown Reykjavik, all within walking distance from one another.

  • Venues have various types of stages, technical equipment and atmosphere. We intend to programme you into the most appropriate venue for your show.

  • All productions will be consulted before final venue allocation.

  • Anticipated audience is estimated and taken into consideration during this stage of the selection process.

  • There are minimal or no storage facilities in the venues. If, however, you require something to be stored, our team will negotiate this during the pre-festival period. Please let the team know if this is the case for your show.

  • Each venue will have volunteers directing audiences in & out of the venue, checking/selling tickets, showrunning all performances and helping any audience with questions.

Technical Requirements

  • We have taken your technical needs into consideration when scheduling the festival.

  • Note that there is no darkness in Iceland in July as the sun does not set. Outdoor shows will therefore always be in daylight no matter how late at night it is.

  • If your show requires a lot of very complicated technical needs and a get-in time that exceeds 30 minutes, please let us know as soon as possible.

  • Please be flexible with technical needs as there are limited resources available, and help us find an appropriate venue for you.

  • Artists that need a skilled technician for more than the 2 hour tech rehearsal, will have to pay an additional ISK 10000 per any extra hour (approximately 100$/80€/70£).

Bring Your Own Venue:

  • Artists are able to bring their own venue. That can be your own living room, a bus shelter, outdoor location, a boat, a graveyard, a classroom, a moving vehicle - anything you can think of.

  • All BYOVenue artists need to obtain permission themselves for conducting a show there, and take care of all of their own technical needs. If necessary, RVK Fringe will try to provide a volunteer to help with ticket sales or other light tasks, but that can not be guaranteed.

  • Any artists outdoors, the festival will find an appropriate spot for them.

Ticketed Venues:

  • The RVK Fringe team covers all the cost of hiring equipment like PA systems and lighting rigs.

  • There is a box office split of 70/30. Profits going to the festival go towards ensuring that all costs of venues and infrastructure on site are covered.

  • 70% of profit of ticket sales for performances go directly to the artists.

  • Tickets will be sold online and at the door for individual performances, but we recommend referencing our suggested pricing guide.

New to RVK Fringe?

  • Access to your allocated stage is strictly limited, generally there is a 15/30 minute changeover before and after your performance. In some cases this can be negotiated, but must be arranged with the production team.

  • Technical rehearsals will be organized between house technicians and production team, approximately 1-2 hours depending on show requirements.

  • 2 hours is the maximum time for a technical rehearsal. Any longer will result in a fee being paid towards the festival.

  • If you need a separate, non-venue based rehearsal space, let us know and we will give you suggestions of rehearsal spaces. However the cost of a rehearsal space is not covered by the festival, nor does the festival have guaranteed access to rehearsal spaces.

Awards

  • RVK Fringe will present awards in various categories at the closing party. The jury will be composed of the production team, volunteers, technicians and sponsors who will take note throughout the week.
